CAVA former Dean V A Deshpande no more

Mysuru: Popular sculptor and former dean of Government College of Visual Arts (formerly CAVA) V A Deshpande passed away on Saturday. He was 66.

Deshpande was one of the longest serving deans of the reputed institute. He served from the year 2005 to 2014. It was during the fag end of his tenure that, the new and spacious building came up in Siddartha Nagar. It was also inaugurated during his last days in the office.

Deshpande is survived by his wife and sculptor Pramodini Deshpande and two sons settled abroad.

Deshapande was born in Badami in 1955 to Ananthrao Deshpande and Laxmibai couple. He had his early schooling in Badami.

Initialliy he joined Dharwad school of art (now named as Halabhavi school of art) for Drawing Teacher’s course. Then moved to M S University Baroda and pursued five year diploma in Sculpture. After that, he continued P G Diploma in sculpture by specializing in metal casting.

After completing his education in 1981, he worked as a lecturer in Malnad collage of engineering in the department of Architecture for three years.

During 1983, he came to Mysuru to serve in CAVA which was newly established then.
He joined the Department of Sculpture as lecturer in 1983, moved to next hierarchy as reader in the same department and became dean of the prestigious institution.

9.5 feet Bronze statue of Babu Jagjeevan Ram at Mysuru railway station junction, 9 feet Bronze statue of Sarvagna in Tamil Nadu, 9 ft Rani Abbakka Devi, 5.8 ft and three ft statues of Shivaratrj Rajendra Swamiji of Suttur Mutt, 12ft mermaid and 18ft Vijayasthamba, FRP statues for GRS Fantasy park, many FRP statues of Egyptians for Planet X Mysuru, Paul Harris at Rotary West School Mysuru, Lue Brail at Deaf and Dumb school, R B Deasi Koppal, DK Naiker Dharwad, Shettappa Siddhappa former Chairman of K R Cooperative Bank Mysuru, five ft Bhuvaneshwari statue for Rajyotsava Committee Hunsur and Gubbi Thotadappa statue in Bengaluru are among his popular works.

Deshpande won many prestigious awards like Gujarat state Lalitkala Academy 1979., Karnataka state Lalitkala Academy 1981, All India Fine Arts and craft society New Delhi 1979 and 1980, Mysuru Dasara exhibition 1985, 50 years of Art in independent India AIFACS New Delhi 2000, Honorary Award 2000 by Karnataka Shilpakala Academy, Benglauru and Karnataka Rajyotsava award in 2019.
