Cauvery row: State Cabinet decides to release 3,500 cusec of water to TN until Sept 26

Bengaluru: In spite of intensified protests by farmers against the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu, the State government on Friday has decided to release 3,500 cusec of water to Tamil Nadu until September 26 from Krishna Raja Sagara reservoir. The cabinet decided to abide by the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC)’s direction to release water to Tamil Nadu.

Informing this to media here on Friday, Water Resources Minister D K Shivakumar said after September 26, the State will explore various legal options to protect the interests of farmers.

“The government needs to respect the court’s directive and also at the same time, need to protect the farmers’ interest,” he added.

He further said that the Cabinet has also decided to go ahead with the Mekedatu project as it will benefit the State farmers. The project involves building a balancing reservoir to regulate water flow to Tamil Nadu and make use of 4.75 tmc of water to Bengaluru. Under the project, there is a proposal for a 400 MW hydroelectricity plant.

Minister Shivakumar informed that the government will submit all necessary documents of Mekedatu project to the court and also to Cauvery Water Management Authority. The State government is hopeful of getting clearance from the Centre.
