Cauvery row: CWRC shock to State govt amidst protests and bandh; State asked to release 3,000 cusec of water

1 min read

Bengaluru: Even as the State government is facing ire of various pro-Kannada and farmers’ organisations for releasing Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu, it suffered a major blow on Tuesday after the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) directed it to release 3,000 cusec of water to the neighbouring State!

The Committee which met on Tuesday directed the State government to release water for 18 days from September 28.

The CWRC’s direction has come as a major shock to the State government that is facing severe protests throughout the Old Mysore region. On Tuesday, the protesting organisations had called for Bengaluru bandh which received mixed response.

This year, the Cauvery catchment area has received at least 53 per cent of less rainfall and most of the reservoirs have gone dry. Yet, the CWRC’s direction to release water from September 28 has come as a rude shock to the State government.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government is demanding 12,500 cusec of Cauvery water before the CWRC. However, the State has opposed Tamil Nadu government’s demand, outrightly.
