2 min read
Mysuru: Dr Vandana Das was brutally stabbed to death while on duty at the Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital in Kottayam, by an intoxicated patient brought in by the police for examination on Wednesday.

The accused Sandeep, who is not only a drug addict but also an Upper Primary school teacher, repeatedly stabbed Dr Das in the neck and chest.
The incident highlights rise in attacks on healthcare workers in Kerala and the failure of the government and police to take effective measures to prevent such incidents.
Mysuru District President of All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO), Subhash who staged protest on the premises of Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMC&RI) blamed the government and police for negligence that led to Dr Das’ death. The police brought in Sandeep without necessary precautions, despite his history of drug addiction. The incident also sheds light on the government’s failure to crack down on drug mafias, further endangering the safety of healthcare workers.
Health Minister Dr Veena George made a statement that Dr Das was an inexperienced doctor and therefore couldn’t save herself, which has been criticized as ridiculous and irresponsible. This response indicates a lack of concern for the safety of healthcare workers and justifies the government’s negligence. The medical community has demanded an unconditional apology from the minister for her insensitive remarks.
In response to the incident, AIDSO activists, including Pushpa, Hema, Chandrika and medical and nursing students, staged a protest.
The incident underscores the need for urgent measures to ensure the safety of healthcare workers and to hold the government and police accountable for their negligence.
