Brain dead teenager’s organs harvested, needy get new lease of life upon transplantation

Mysuru: A teenager has given a new lease of life to the needy after his death.
Sharath Kumar, 19, was brought to Spandana Hospital, Mysore from Government Hospital Malavalli in Mandya.
Further Sharath was shifted to Apollo BGS Hospitals in a critical condition on December 24 for further care. Initial CT scan showed brain stem infarct. He was then shifted to ICU at 1.30 am for life support and intensive care.
Sharath was kept on life support for two days while he was in a very critical state. On the third day December 26, he was declared brain dead due to brain stem failure as per the hospital protocol stipulated by the transplant of human organs act 1994 by panel list doctors at Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysore, which is now a Licensed Centre for Multi organ Transplant (OTC).
Sharath was healthy before the incident and further tests confirmed his eligibility for organ donation. His parents were counselled for organ donation as per the defined protocol, the deceased patient’s parents came forward to donate his organs.
As per organ donation protocols, officials from Jeeva Sarthakathe which was earlier known as ZCCK initiated the process in accordance to the organ recipients waiting list. At around 5.10 pm Sharath’s Organs (Heart, 2 Kidneys, 1Pancreas, 1Liver, Corneas) were harvested with cross clamp at 4:33 pm at Apollo BGS Hospitals Mysuru.
A Simultaneous Kidney and Pancreas Transplant (SKPT) and a Liver were transplanted at Apollo BGS Hospitals.
