2 min read

Mysuru: Putting all the speculations to rest, BJP has announced the candidature of scion of erstwhile royal family of Mysuru Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar from Mysuru- Kodagu Constituency.

Yaduveer has found place among 20 BJP candidates announced against a total of 28 Lok Sabha constituencies of Karnataka.

With this, it is confirmed that the two-term MP Prathap Simha who was hopeful of getting ticket to contest the election for third consecutive term has been denied renomination.

Following the candidature of Yaduveer, the member of erstwhile royal family has made a return to electoral politics, after Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, who had last served as Congress MP in 1999.

Srikantadatta, the three time Congress MP died on December 10, 2013. Following his death, his wife Pramoda Devi Wadiyar adopted her grand nephew Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar as her son. Ever since Yaduveer was anointed as the 27th titular king of erstwhile royal family, his name gained traction whenever the elections were announced.

Wadiyars who ruled the princely Mysore state for 600 years since Yaduraya founded Yadu dynasty in 1399, are reverred by the people of Mysuru still for their vast contributions in building the prosperous State.

Jayachamaraja Wadiyar was the 25th and last Maharaja of Mysore who signed the treaty of accession, accepting the union of India in 1950.

Following the abdication of royalty, Jayachamaraja Wadiyar had served as Raja Pramukh of Madras and Mysore States. Jayachamaraja Wadiyar was succeeded by his only son Srikantadatta to the throne, but in a titular role following his (Jayachamaraja Wadiyar) death in 1974.
