Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway lacks safety measures: Minister Dr G Parameshwara

1 min read

Mysuru: Following complaints on increasing accidents on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway, Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara who inspected the highway – on Saturday – observed that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has not taken any safety measures on the Mysuru- Bengaluru Expressway.

Quoting a report on the Expressway submitted by ADGP Traffic and Road Safety Alok Kumar, Minister G Parameshwara said that the Expressway lacked safety measures including lack of signage.

It may be recalled here that ADGP Alok Kumar had inspected the Expressway from Kumbalgodu on the outskirts of Bengaluru to Ramanagara, on Tuesday.

Minister also pointed out that the NHAI authorities were requested not to collect toll on the Expressway till the works are completed. But the Expressway was inaugurated in a hurry to gain political mileage, he remarked.

The Expressway has witnessed over 571 accidents since it was thrown open to public by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March this year. Although it is the first access-controlled Expressway – built at a cost of 8,408 cr – in South India, the 119-km stretch of Expressway has become a headache for the Highway authorities.

While overspeeding could be the reason behind the accidents, lack of safety measures to check the accidents too have contributed to the deaths.
