Basavanna’s Organs donated, saves 4 lives

Mysuru: Basavanna, 56 years was brought to Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru on April 17 from KR Pet, Mandya in an extremely critical condition. The initial CT scan showed a brain stem infarct and he was shifted to ICU immediately for life support and intensive care.
Basavanna was kept on life support as he was in a very critical state. On April 21 his condition worsened and at 6.39 am he was declared brain dead due to brain stem failure as per the hospital protocol stipulated by the transplant of human organs Act 1994 by panelist Doctors at Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru.
Basavanna was healthy before this incident and further tests confirmed his eligibility for organ donation. His family was counselled who came forward to donate his organs.
As per organ donation protocols, officials from SOTTO (State Organ & Tissue Transplant organization) (Formerly Jeeva Sarthakathe) initiated the process by the organ recipients’ waiting list. On April 21 at around 3.50 pm Basavanna’s Organs (Liver, 2 Kidneys and Heart Valves) were harvested with a cross-clamp done at 3.23 pm at Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru. The organs donated are as per the following list.
1. Liver Apollo BGS hospitals, Mysuru
2. Left kidney Apollo BGS hospitals, Mysuru
3 .Right kidney Manipal hospital, Mysuru
4 . Heart valves Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bengaluru
Apollo BGS Hospitals is the Licensed Centre for Multiorgan Transplants in Mysuru which is now recognized as the 5th Zone for Organ Transplants under SOTTO, Karnataka. To facilitate the crossmatch facility for Organ Transplants in this region, SOTTO has signed an MOU with Apollo BGS Hospitals, under which all cross-matching of transplant patients will be undertaken at Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru, saving the travel time to Bengaluru, which is crucial during the Organ Transplantation.
