Chamarajanagar: T Balachandra conservator of forest and field director, Project Tiger, Bandipur has clarified that the department has not roped in any private individuals, organisations or NGOs in assessing crop or livestock damage.
In a press release, the forest officer has said ‘ it has come to notice that certain organisations and individuals are claiming that through a project known as ‘ Wild Save’ they have been helping half a million villagers around the Bandipur and Nagarahole Tiger Reserves in getting compensation for crop or livestock losses due to wildlife depredation and also assisting the government on settlement of compensation claims’.
For the last several years, for fostering co-existence of local communities and wildlife, the Bandipur officials have been actively involved in mitigating human- wildlife conflicts around Bandipur through construction of elephant proof trenches, barricades and also by monetarily compensating the loss of crops or livestock besides human suffering by the fringe village communities’.
The activities such as crop, livestock damage assessment, processing of claim records, and settlement of compensation, ex-gratia payment claims etc are performed by the forest officials, the release said.
