Bengaluru: The ban on two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws and tractors on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway will come into effect from today (August 1). However, the National Highway Authority of India has allowed these vehicles to use service roads, instead. The decision has been taken to mitigate increased accidents on the stretch.
Those who violate the ban will have to pay Rs 500 as penalty. There will be mobile speed radars and AI-based cameras installed at the stretch to keep an eye on the traffic violation.
It may be recalled here that ever since the Expressway was thrown open to the public, there have been demands to ban these vehicles on the Expressway. Experts from the Highway had recently conducted an inspection on the Expressway and had raised concerns about plying of two-wheelers and auto rickshaws.
However, this has received mixed response from bikers and even farmers. A few biker groups have expressed their displeasure over the ban on two-wheelers stating the alternative roads were not in motorable condition and they were being deprived to use the good roads.
Even, several farmers felt that they too were deprived of their right to use the land after sacrificing their land for the Expressway. “We have given our land away for the Expressway. We do not own expensive vehicles but a humble two-wheeler or a tractor. But with the ban, we feel bad,” said some of the farmers, according to some reports quoting the farmers.
