Mysuru: The district police have busted a baby selling racket and have arrested a mother and daughter duo. The duo had allegedly sold a new born male and female babies to childless couples for money.

On Wednesday SP R Chetan told media persons, the accused are identified as- Saraswati alias Srimati aged 60 years wife of Wine Chandrashekar and her daughter Sri Lakshmi, 31, wife of Ram Mohan, both residents of R P road, Nanjangud town. They are arrested.
The racket was able to be unearthed after an alert angawadi worker named Shashikala noticed a male baby missing during her regular monitoring of the lactating mothers and babies.
When she enquired the baby’s mother Jyothi of Tyagaraja Colony in Nanjangud, the latter said that the baby is with Srimati for the last 25 days and she is enquiring about it’s well being over phone. Moreover Jyothi pleaded that she wants her baby back as she had already lost her husband during pregnancy.
Jyoti was second wife to her husband Mahadev. After losing his first wife six years ago, Mahadev had married Jyoti three years ago. She had delivered a still born girl baby later. When she conceived again, Mahadev was reluctant to carry the womb. However, Srimati who was known to the couple had assured to take care of both Jyoti and the child. Meanwhile Mahadev passed away.
Jyoti had delivered a baby boy through C-section at SLES Multi-speciality hospital at N R Mohalla in Mysuru on June 10.
In the later stage of enquiry, Jyothi tried to make the anganwadi worker believe that the baby has died. Following this, the anganwadi worker learnt that Jyoti had given the baby for adoption without following any legal procedures.
Shashikala lodged a complaint at Kavalande Police station. Later it came to know that baby was sold to a family in Uddur Hosahalli in Holenarsipur.
Later it was also found that the accused had also sold another eight month old girl baby of one Manula to another family in Ashraya colony in Kollegal.
Police who took two babies into their custody later handed over them to Bapuji Children’s Home.
Besides, Rs four lakh cash was seized from the accused. We also enquired about the involvement of hospital staff and are collecting more information regarding the two cases, said SP Chetan.
DySP Govindaraju and Nanjangud Circle Police Inspector Lakshmikantha Talwar investigated the case.
