At least four die as heavy rains lash state

Bengaluru: Majority of the districts in the State are witnessing heavy downpour for the last two days. Several rivers are flowing in full spate inundating several villages and causing floods. At least four persons including a four-year-old boy died due to heavy rains in the State.

Sharath Kumar (23) of Bhadravathi had gone to watch Arashinagundi falls near Kollur in Baindur taluk when he slipped and fell into gushing waters and was swept away. His body is still untraceable.

In Kundapur taluk, Halladi, Gokuladasa Prabu (53) died after he fell into a canal in Karkunji in Udupi district. In Hebri, Rachana (12) was washed away in a lake near Shedimane on Sunday.

Up north in Jewargi taluk Kalaburagi district, Basamma Basavaraja (35) died after her two-floor building collapsed on her. Basamma was in the house along with her dauther Ashwini when the incident happened. However, onlookers said Ashwini ran out when she heard the noise but Basamma was trapped inside. In Misbah Nagar in Kalaburagi, a four-year-old boy Naheem fell into a waterlogged drain and died.

Many parts of Kalaburagi including Chincholi, Chittapur and Kamalapura taluks are witnessing heavy rain and water has entered into many homes.

The situation is worse in several parts of Uttar Kannada district as several rivers including Aghanashini are flowing in full spate. Many villages on the banks of the river like Hegade, Mururu, Manaki and Deevagi villages are submerged. Gundabala river in Honnavar has inundated several fields. The IMD has sounded red alert in the district.

Several districts including Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttar Kannada and Hassan have declared holiday for schools.
