As educational institutions insist on hostel fee, aggrieved parents, students write to PM Narendra Modi

Mysuru: In the wake of educational insitutions demanding hostel fee, students and parents have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The students and parents stated in the letter  “we are all severely affected by the pandemic and it will take a long time to resume normal life. In every field irrespective of  business, agriculture etc., people are badly hit and you have been striving hard to bring back normalcy. We heartily appreciate your concern towards the countrymen”.
The lockdown process due to Covid-19 started almost in the month of April and for almost six months college hostels were closed and students are taking online classes from their home. But the educational institutions which run hostels for their students have already collected the hostel fee for the full year of 2019-2020. Out of this, for almost six months hostels were closed. Such institutions have not given any rebate or reduction to the students for the period when hostels were closed. All institutions such as medical, engineering, technical and vocational courses are now again insisting for payment of hostel fee for the academic year 2020-21.
This is highly disgraceful. Parents are in such a situation of financial distress that they are not in a position to gather funds for their wards educational fee.
Therefore, we hereby prevail upon you to take up the matter with instructions to all educational institutions to waive off six months hostel fee of lockdown period and collect only six months hostel fee for the academic year, so that parents will be able to heave a sigh of relief. We shall be grateful to know the action taken by you in this regard” stated the letter by aggrieved parents of school and college students in Karnataka.
