Arjuna, the showstopper of Mysuru Dasara no more

Hassan: The famed Dasara elephant Arjuna has died in a rescue operation at Hassan.
Arjuna, the 62 year old tusker from Balle elephant camp was the showstopper of world famous Jamboo Savari of Mysuru Dasara, considering his gigantic built and majestic walk, during Jamboo Savari that is watched by not less than five lakh people in Mysuru alone.
Arjuna had suffered critical injuries and succumbed during the operation to capture a rogue elephant at Yesaluru in Hassan district.
Veterinarian Dr Ramesh was darting the rogue elephant, when the elephant charged towards Arjuna and the latter collapsed in the fight, breathing his last.

Arjuna was captured in 1968 from Western Ghats in a Khedda Operation. He was tamed and soon became a part of Dasara for several decades including the recent Dasara.
After Balarama, the Golden Howdah carrier in Dasara, Arjuna was named his successor and also handled the task successfully from the year 2012 to 2019, till he was succeeded by another elephant Abhimanyu.
Arjuna had also carried golden howdah for the first time in 1990, when another famed howdah carrier Drona died of electric shock.
Conservator of Forest, Nagarahole Tiger Reserve Harshakumar Chikkanaragund spoke to Mysoorunews.com and confirmed the death of Arjuna.
