New Delhi: Belagavi MP Suresh Angadi on Friday assumed charge as the Union Minister of State for railways. With his nomination to the ministry, he has become a 10th MP from Karnataka to occupy the coveted chair at one of the prominent ministries.

The recent member of parliament from Karnataka to serve in railways was Bengaluru North MP D V Sadananda Gowda ( who was later shifted to law ministry, statistics and planning).

The State’s association with the prominent public transport ministry started with H C Dasappa ( 1963 to 64), C M Poonacha ( 1967 to 69), T A Pai ( 1972). It was followed up with Kengal Hanumanthaiah ( MP from 1962 to 1977), C K Jaffer Sharief ( 1991 to 1995), Basangowda Patil Yatnal ( 2003 to 2004), K H Muniyappa ( 2009 to 2012), Mallikarjun Kharge ( 2013 to 2014), D V Sadananda Gowda (May 2014 to November 2014) and now Angadi.

Except for Yatnal and Muniyappa, the rest of them who served earlier were cabinet rank ministers. Yatnal and Muniyappa were state ministers.

Among them, the name of Jaffer Sharief still remains etched in the annals of railways for his notable contribution to the public transportation sector. He was instrumental in converting the tracks to broad gauge and setting up wheel and axle plant in Bengaluru.
