Amid by- election heat, Lord Bahubali shines in myriad hues

Mysuru: The 70th year of Mahamastakasbhisheka to Lord Bahubali was performed at Gommatagiri Sri Kshetra in Hunsur on November 24.

As the code of conducg is in place due to the by- elections on December 5, elected representatives stayed away from the annual religious event.

The 18 feet tall idol was anointed with sacred water, tender coconut, sugarcane juice, sandal paste, vermilion and turmeric.

The rituals were performed under the supervision of Hombuja Jain Mutt’s Dr Devendra Keerthi Bhattaraka Swamiji from Shivamogga and Siddantha Keerthi Bhattaraka Swamiji from Digambar Jain Mutt, Arathipura in Mandya.

The rituals earlier held during September is being held in November from this year.

The first Mahamastakabhisheka was conducted on September 10, 1950. Since then it is being celebrated every year.

The statue is believed to have been sculpted during the reign of Ganga kings. However there is no religious inscriptions to supprt the claims.
