AIISH 57th Annual Day celebrations on Tuesday

Mysuru: The 57th Annual Day celebrations of All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), Mysuru is scheduled on Tuesday at 10.30 AM at AIISH seminar Hall, Knowledge Park, Naimisham Campus.

Rajesh Bhushan, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar will be the distinguished guests at the inaugural function.

Dr M Pushpavathi, Director, AIISH will preside. Addanda C Cariappa, Director, Rangayana, Mysuru will be the chief guest and Vasuki Vaibhav, Singer, Lyricist and Music Director will be the guest of honour for the cultural program which will be held at 6.30 PM at AIISH seminar Hall, Knowledge Park, Naimisham Campus.

Dr M Pushpavathi, Director, AIISH will preside over the function.

On this occasion clinical training module, tests and therapy resource series and manual on early childhood education will be released.

Further felicitations of retired employees, employees who completed 25 years of service, PhD Awardees, meritorious students and AIISHian of the year award will be conferred on this occasion.

AIISH was established in 1965, for human resource development, research, clinical services, and public education in the field of communication disorders.

On the invitation of Government of India, Dr Martin F Palmer, Director, Institute of Logopedics, Wichita, Kansas, USA visited India in 1963 and recommended for setting up an Institute of Logopedics in India at Mysore. On August 09, 1965, All India Institute of Logopedics started functioning in Rama Mandir (a rented building) with Dr B M Rao as the first Director. On July 25, 1966, Dr S Radhakrishnan, the then President of India laid the foundation stone of the Institute building. On October 02, 1966, MScprogram in Speech and Hearing, the first of its kind in the county, was initiated by the institute with affiliation to University of Mysore. On October 10,  1966, the institute was registered as an autonomous Institute under the Society Registration Act with the name “All India Institute of Speech and Hearing”. The institute has blossomed into one of the premier establishments across South Asia in the field of communication disorders. The Institute has flourished leaps and bounds over the years on all the four fronts: Academic, research, clinical services and advocacy. Over decades of its existence, the alumni have carved a niche in their chosen careers the world over, the clinical services have crossed geographical barriers throughout the country and the applied research has contributed to enrich lives of persons with communication disorders.

Over the last 57 years, growth of the institute has been phenomenal. The Institute began with a single PG program, but now offers 17 academic programs, including one certificate program, three diploma programs, two undergraduate programs, four PG diploma programs and three Post graduate programs in addition to the three PhD programs and a Post-doctoral fellowship programs. The Institute has been recognised as a Centre of excellence in the Area of Deafness by WHO, as a Centre for Advanced Research by UGC, as a Science and Technology Institute by DST, as a Centre of Excellence by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, as a College with potential for Excellence by UGC and is accredited by NAAC with highest A grade.

The Institute was upgraded to ISO 9001:2015 certifications in 2016-17. It is recognised as a Nodal Centre for implementation of National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness and Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

Now, the Institute has 11 departments with state-of-the-art facilities to provide best available clinical services in entire Asia. Holistic rehabilitation of persons with communication disorders through complete diagnostic and therapeutic services are provided under one roof at nominal costs by most experienced professionals in the field.

AIISH has reached out to the Nation through a Diploma Programme via video-conferencing at RML Hospital, New Delhi, AIIPMR, Mumbai, JLMNC Ajmer, SCBMC Cuttack, CSMMU Lucknow, IGMC Shima, RIMS, Ranchi and JNMC, Bahagalpur.

Further, the Institute also provides mentoring to the three Institutes viz. RIMS, Imphal, JIPMER, Puducherry, NSBMC Jabalpur for BASLP program with provisions for tele-rehabilitation and tele-diagnosis services at these centres.

The Institute also has 4 outreach centres to extend its services to the masses – at Akkihebbalu, Hullahalli, Humballi and Sagar taluk in Karnataka and New Born screening for communication disorders. Camps are conducted each nook and corner of the country to reach the unreached by the institute, according to A R Keerthi PRO of AIISH.
