AICC Prez poll sees 96 pc voting; results on Wednesday

Bengaluru: In all 96 per cent voters turnout has been registered for the election to All India Congress Committee (AICC) President held on Monday. Of the total 9588 leaders and party workers with voting rights, 9100 have voted across the nation.
The counting of votes followed by the declaration of results is on Wednesday (October 19).
Veteran Congressman M Mallikarjun Kharge and Tiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor are in the fray. However considering the seniority of Kharge and his loyalty to the party mainly Gandhis’ ( late Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and now their son Rahul Gandhi), his victory appears imminent.

Of the total nine booths set up at KPCC office on Queen’s road in the city, 494 leaders including Kharge, KPCC President D K Shivakumar, Opposition leader Siddaramaiah, Opposition leader in Legislative Council B K Hariprasad and several other leaders cast their ballot.

While former DCM Dr G Parameshwar, Rajya Sabha member G C Chandrashekar and five other leaders who are on election duty in other States abstained from voting.
While another leader and former Union minister K Rahman Khan who is down by Covid-19, exercised his franchise through the polling officer.
AICC former President Rahul Gandhi who is on Bharat Jodo Yatra at Ballari, cast his vote along with 39 other leaders at a makeshift polling booth arranged at Sanganakallu village. Bengaluru rural MP D K Suresh also voted here.
While Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi and her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra voted at the party headquarters in New Delhi.
