Ahead of Jamboo Savari on October 26, Dasara elephants undergo psychological practice

1 min read

Mysuru: With barely a week left for Jamboo Savari on October 26, five Dasara elephants are undergoing psychological training at Palace precincts.

Abhimanyu who has been selected as a successor to howdah carrier Arjuna, is practicing with wooden howdah mounted on his back.

As the Golden Howdah weighs 750-kg, the Wooden Howdah is stuffed with sand bags weighing 750 kg to acclimatise the elephant.

He is taken around within Palace compound with Kumki elephants Vijaya and Kaveri for company.

Abhimanyu has been participating in Dasara since 21 years. He will be carrying the howdah with the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari on the D-day.
Forest veterinarian Dr Nagaraj said ” the practice with wooden howdah is in place from 1995 onwards. It’s a kind of psychological trial for the pachyderms. Every year the elephants were ambling on the procession route from Palace to Bannimantap covering five km on one side. However this time with jamboo Savari restricted to Palace premises, the elephants will be covering a distance of 290 metres. They are being taken on practice for two rounds, twice in a day”.
“The 54-year-old Abhimanyu is a cool and gentle elephant. He is the best leader among the five jumbos”, he added.
Along with Abhimanyu, Gopi, Vikrama, Vijaya and Kaveri are the other elephants who are also a part of daily practice.
