New Delhi: Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H D Kumaraswamy, held significant discussions with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, regarding the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) project aimed at reducing Bengaluru’s traffic congestion.
Meeting Gadkari at his residence in New Delhi on Wednesday, Kumaraswamy appealed for the revival of this stalled project.
Responding promptly to Kumaraswamy’s request, Gadkari assured that the project proposal would soon be presented to the *Public Private Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPPAC)* for evaluation and would be implemented at the earliest.
What is the Satellite Town Ring Road Project?
The Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) project was initially launched in 2013 but faced delays for various reasons. It is designed to connect eight industrial towns surrounding Bengaluru, including Dabaspete, Doddaballapur, Devanahalli, Sulibele, Hoskote, Anekal, Kanakapura, Ramanagara, and Magadi.
This four-to-six-lane controlled-access road will also connect to the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway and Tamil Nadu’s Hosur, ensuring smooth transportation.
The primary objective of the STRR is to prevent heavy vehicles transporting industrial goods from entering Bengaluru city, thereby decongesting urban traffic.
After being stalled since 2018, the project has now received the necessary approvals, thanks to Gadkari’s support and Kumaraswamy’s intervention. The project is expected to significantly benefit Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, and Ramanagara districts while alleviating traffic pressure in the city.
Kumaraswamy mentioned that Gadkari has instructed concerned authorities to expedite the disbursement of compensation to farmers for land acquisition. “This will benefit farmers in districts such as Ramanagara who have lost their land,” he said.
The project will span approximately 135 kilometers in Karnataka, with an estimated cost of Rs 4,750 crore. The fully controlled-access road with four to six lanes will enable smooth traffic flow without interruptions, passing through Bengaluru’s satellite towns and easing congestion in the city, Kumaraswamy explained.
“This ambitious initiative by the central government to reduce Bengaluru’s traffic congestion will also be a significant contribution to industrial growth. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and with Nitin Gadkari’s commitment to Karnataka’s development, this project is finally seeing the light of day,” Kumaraswamy concluded.
