Abhiram G Sankar! IAS officer to bird watcher, outgoing DC has set a precedent

3 min read

Mysuru: The last time we heard about  deputy commissioners who had endeared themselves to the people with their style of functioning were C Shikha and D Randeep.

Though Abhiram G Sankar was not an immediate successor to either Shikha or Randeep, he came in after two others, who made a quick exit serving for a very brief period.

It was his unblemished attitude, a cool way of approach and most importantly his passion towards nature, especially as an avid bird lover, Abhiram the outgoing deputy commissioner had won the love of many.

Abhiram came to Mysuru as Deputy commissioner on April 30, 2018 and when he is all set to demit office, he has left behind a precedent that is worth to be emulated by his successor(s).

Abhiram was popular among Mysureans and political leaders alike and was frequently witnessed by media persons when the then district minister V Somanna had certified him as a “Most honest and prompt DC”.

Bird watcher

A passionate birder, Abhiram, if not busy with his work, was seen with a binocular and camera, roaming around the serene Kukkarahalli lake that is known for its flora and fauna attracting several species of roosting birds.

It was his idea that Mysuru Winter festival introduced Mysuru Bird Festival and was successfully conducted for two years and attracted more number of nature lovers.

His facebook posts about birds has thousands of likes. “ethical birding is key factor in bird watching”, is Abhiram’s keyword for novices in the realm.

Dasara success

Abhiram successfully organised Nada Habba Mysuru Dasara in 2018 and 2019 and his coordination and planning made it perfect.

Own water bottle

Abhiram a nature lover is a propagator of sustainable development. He set a model for others by carrying his own water bottle and stopped usage of plastic water bottles in DC office.

Covid champion

Abhiram was really under stress, ever since Corona pandemic gripped Mysuru since March. The cluster cases that started from Jubilant Generics a pharmaceutical factory of Nanjangud was deftly handled by Abhiram. The whole workers were tested and shifted to quarantine facility. For once he had succeeded in making Mysuru Zero Covid District, till the cases resumed with the opening of borders for inter-state returnees.

Evan his new initiatives like home isolation, effective team management and Corona Kit provision along with Mysuru Druggists and Chemists Association had won appreciation from several quarters.

Abhiram G Shankar Fans Page

Abhiram shared a good rapport with people across Mysuru, and during his visit to remote places and border areas, he interacted with public in a very impressive manner. It is evident again, with Abhiram G Shankar Fans- a Facebook page having 3,000 likes and followers.

Central service

Now, Abhiram is transferred to ATI Mysuru as a Joint Director. It will be for a short duration, as the buzz is that the officer will be leaving on central service, mostly in the  North.

Central government has recognised the potential of Abhiram. If all goes well, Abhiram will be joining Central IAS Taining Institute, Mussoorie, Uttarakhand shortly.
