Mysuru: The Mysuru City Corporation Election Campaign Committee urged the government to conduct the long-delayed urban local body elections, without further postponement.
Addressing the gathering at Mysuru District Journalists Association (MDJA) premises on Sunday, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) State President and actor Mukhyamantri Chandru extended his support for the committee’s
demand.
He criticised the repeated postponement of local body elections, stating that such
actions undermine the democratic principles and erode public trust in the system.
“The State Election Commission (SEC) is an independent constitutional body with the
mandate to conduct free and fair elections. Governments must refrain from interfering in its functions. People have the right to elect their representatives on time and delaying the
elections is a denial of that right,” said Chandru.
The leaders collectively criticised the state government for its hesitation to announce the
election schedule. They emphasised the need for greater transparency and accountability in
ensuring timely elections.
Furthermore, Chandru called upon Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to uphold
democratic values by directing the immediate conduct of elections.
He stressed the importance of protecting the independence of the SEC and ensuring free and fair elections without political influence.
The committee reaffirmed its commitment to continue the agitation until the elections are announced, appealing to the public to support the cause for democratic accountability.
