Take precautions against Brain Eating Amoeba: Sabarimala pilgrims from Karnataka advised

1 min read

Mysuru: Commissionerate of Health and Family Welfare Services has warned Sabarimala pilgrims from the State to take precautions against brain- eating amoeba, that is claiming lives in Kerala.

Naegleria Fowleri is an independently living amoeba, mostly found in cold water and soil; like stagnant water, pond, swimming pool etc. The infection won’t spread from person to person and on consuming contaminated water.

Naegleria Fowleri is the most virulent micro organism, which enters the body through nose and reaches the brain causing amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rare, serious and fatal disease.

The Sabarimala pilgrims should either close their noses with nose clips or hold their noses tight, while taking bath in pond during the pilgrimage. Within seven days, if they experience fever, severe headache, vomiting, stiffness in neck, changes in mental state and behavioral disorders, they shouldn’t be neglected. The nearby Government Hospitals or doctors should be contacted, advised Commissionerate of Health and Family Welfare Services.
