Mysuru’s GI portfolio touches 25, says MP Yaduveer Wadiyar

Bengaluru: Mysuru now holds 25 Geographical Indication (GI) tags, MARKING ONE OF THE HIGHEST REGIONAL concentrations of protected products in the country, according to Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, Member of Parliament from Mysuru.
Wadiyar who was the chief guest at the Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations, organised by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) said the expanding GI registry underscores the region’s deep artisanal legacy and the need to preserve its unique crafts, foods and textiles.
The scion of the erstwhile Mysore royal family highlighted that iconic products such as Mysore Pak, Mysore Silk, Mysore Sandal Soap, Mysore Steel, Mysore Rosewood Inlay and several handloom, handicraft and agri-based products now enjoy GI protection, helping artisans access better markets and ensuring authenticity for consumers.
Yaduveer added that sustained promotion of GI-linked clusters can create livelihoods, boost tourism and strengthen Mysuru’s cultural identity on the global map.
Talking about the vision of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Viksit Bharat’, Wadiyar said the nation was on the right track and needed support from all quarters. “We need to be self-sufficient.”
Wadiyar also talked about the formation of Karnataka and the role played by individuals and organisations, making them pride of Karnataka. The FKCCI is one of them, he added.
The FKCCI on the occasion honoured Dr C Somashekar – IAS retired, Dr Pratima Murthy, Medical Field (Director & Senior Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Sangeetha Katti, Musician, Gururaj Hosakote, Folk Musician D Muniraju, Educationist, Mohan Shankar, Film artiste, Dharmendra Kumar, Historian, M Ramamurthy, Sculptor, Dr Raksha Karthik, Danseuse and Mahendra Munoth for Social Service.
The President of FKCCI, Uma Reddy in her welcome address traced the history of FKCCI and its role in the development of Karnataka.
Those present on the occasion included T Sairam Prasad – Senior Vice President, B P Shashidhar – Vice President, Dr Shalini Nalwad, Founder Director, IPATT Air Ambulance Services; M G Balakrishan – Immediate Past President & K V Rajendra Kumar – Programme Co-ordinator.
