MGP January Meeting: Preparation to celebrate World Consumer Rights Day

2 min read
Mysuru: The theme of World Consumer Rights Day is a just transition to sustainable lifestyles along with greater protection and empowerment for consumers. For us in Mysuru, the latter theme is urgent considering the near absence of consumer movement.

One telling example is the complete absence of any celebration of National Consumer Day on December 24, 2024. To avoid such a sorry state of affairs, Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) has organised the monthly meeting on January 12 at 4 pm at its premises, at No 6/1 Vivekananda Road, Yadavagiri, Mysuru to discuss how every educational institution can be involved to celebrate it. If the youths can be taught the importance of consumer rights and responsibilities in the schools/colleges in a creative way – not through lecturing or asking some ones to deliver speeches – then it can go a long way.

One possible way is for the schools to have essay competition or poster competition (one such poster has been attached) or through street plays, or discussion among the students to make them creative, and such strategies will be far more productive. Some schools have already decided to ask the interested students to put MGP’s posters in some prominent places as a practical way to get involved in spreading consumer rights.

Monthly meeting will give the scope for all – especially teachers and NSS volunteers – to participate to discuss ideas. Such a discussion may throw up some out of the box ideas. With ever increasing online frauds, World Consumer Rights day has greater importance.
