Mysuru: Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H D Kumaraswamy, urged officials to work diligently to ensure that the public welfare schemes introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government are effectively delivered to the people.
Chairing the DISHA Committee meeting in Mysuru on Saturday and reviewing the progress of various departments, the Union Minister said, “Development should be a combined effort between the Center and the State, requiring mutual coordination and collaboration. Officials play a crucial role in this synergy. Such coordination can facilitate the upgradation of Mysuru airport and the implementation of highway and railway projects,” he emphasised.

He added that economically weaker families need support to strengthen their financial stability, with both central and state governments offering targeted programs. “Identify eligible beneficiaries and support those who have the will to improve their lives,” he advised.
Highlighting the success of grape farmers in Bagalkot who formed clusters to receive subsidies of 70% to 90%, Kumaraswamy encouraged officials to focus on initiatives like Mudra, Vishwakarma, and NRLM to economically empower the underprivileged. “There are numerous programs for tribal communities. Officials must show greater enthusiasm and work diligently to implement these schemes effectively,” he said.
“If you can help even four people by the end of each day, you’ll experience personal satisfaction. Serving people is equivalent to serving God. I am not preaching; I am merely sharing my experience with you,” he remarked.

“Youths are losing direction”
Kumaraswamy expressed concern over unemployment among youth. “Youngsters are losing direction due to a lack of job opportunities during their prime years. This has made them a burden on their families. Developing an interest in self-employment among them is essential. The Skill Development Department has a major responsibility to ensure that more youth find jobs,” he asserted.
“It’s not about the Center versus the State. We are all with you. If there are any problems, bring them to my attention, or that of our MPs and MLAs. We will stand by you. We will cooperate to ensure the state’s progress,” Kumaraswamy assured officials.
The minister also reviewed plans to upgrade Mysuru airport and urged officials to expedite the acquisition and transfer of the required land. He similarly directed the prompt handover of land for upgrading Saganahalli railway station.

Regarding the Jal Jeevan Mission, Kumaraswamy questioned its implementation, “How many villages are actually receiving clean drinking water? In many places, water pipelines and taps have been installed, but water isn’t reaching the villages. Officials must ensure that there is no contamination of clean water supplies and that pipelines are regularly monitored to prevent health risks for entire communities.”
He criticised delays under the AMRUT scheme, echoing complaints from MP Sunil Bose about uncovered trenches left after laying pipelines. “Ensure trenches are properly filled to allow safe movement of children and the elderly, especially during rains, as potholes on roads can be dangerous,” he warned.
“PM Vishwakarma, Mudra Schemes need better implementation”
The Union Minister expressed concerns that people applying for financial assistance under PM Vishwakarma and Mudra schemes were facing rejection. “This is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary project. If these schemes fail to reach the people, what is their purpose?” he asked.
Kumaraswamy noted that benefits under PM Vishwakarma scheme are restricted to those continuing family trades, and others are being denied loans. “Even tailors are not receiving loans. Officials must identify genuine beneficiaries and ensure that their applications are not rejected without proper verification,” he demanded.
Regarding the Mudra scheme, Kumaraswamy said, “Although large sums are claimed to have been disbursed under the Mudra scheme, people still complain everywhere about being denied loans. District officials must immediately investigate and address these concerns.”

“Introduce high-yield cotton varieties”
Raising concerns about the decline in cotton cultivation in Mysuru, the minister questioned, “Why has the area under cotton cultivation decreased from one lakh hectares to just 20,000 hectares?”
He directed agricultural officials to introduce high-yield cotton varieties currently being cultivated successfully in Raichur district. “Farmers here should be informed about the benefits and profitability of these new varieties,” he instructed.
Expressing dissatisfaction over social forestry efforts, Kumaraswamy stated that Karnataka lags behind other states in this regard. “The Mysuru region must increase forest cover, and saplings planted should be carefully nurtured,” he added.
Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, Chamarajanagar MP Sunil Bose and MLAs G D Harish Gowda, T S Srivatsa, Deputy Commissioner G Lakshmikanth Reddy, Police Commissioner Seema Latkar and other senior officials were present.
