New Delhi: In a fiery address in the Rajya Sabha, former Prime Minister and senior member H D Deve Gowda strongly criticized the Congress MPs for moving an unprecedented impeachment motion and no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Expressing grave concern over the situation, Deve Gowda defended both the Chairman and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the opposition to uphold the dignity of Parliament and cease disrupting proceedings.
“This is the first time in history that such a motion has been moved against the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha,” Deve Gowda stated, referencing the impeachment motion against Dhankhar.
He emphasised the gravity of the precedent being set, warning that it could have dire implications for India’s democratic system.
“For the first time, they are setting such a new precedent, and this is going to destroy our democratic system. We cannot and will not tolerate this,” he added firmly.
Deve Gowda lamented the disruption caused by certain Congress members, calling it a deliberate effort to undermine the functioning of the house.
“Some of their colleagues are disturbing the house. They are not allowing it to function and are creating ruckus,” he said.
The former PM also appealed directly to Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, urging him to take charge and ensure his party members uphold parliamentary decorum.
“I tell my friend Kharge that he shouldn’t allow his colleagues to behave in this manner. I sincerely request them to allow the house to function,” Deve Gowda said.
He expressed disappointment at what he described as an insult to both the Prime Minister and the democratic system.
“Not only are they insulting the Prime Minister but are also insulting democracy. This behavior will not be tolerated,” he asserted, reiterating the need for respect and order in the Rajya Sabha.
In his speech, Deve Gowda also addressed the impartiality of Chairman Dhankar, commending his conduct in the role.
“You are not partial; you are impartial. This is not the way they should behave in the house. Some members want to insult you,” he remarked, defending the Chairman from opposition criticism.
The senior leader concluded his address with a stern warning to the Congress MPs, urging them to stop disrupting the proceedings.
“The house must function accordingly. You are making a mockery of the entire system. For how long will they do this?” he questioned, signaling a firm stance against the opposition’s actions.
Deve Gowda’s remarks reflect growing concerns over the deteriorating standards of parliamentary conduct and underline his support for the Rajya Sabha Chairman and the Prime Minister amid escalating tensions in both the houses.
