1 min read

Bengaluru: The Film Industry for Rights & Equality (FIRE), India’s first cinema industry rights organisation, recently met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urging to establish a committee to safeguard women in the Kannada film industry, similar to the initiatives in Malayalam film industry.

Senior activist and journalist Vijayamma, along with actors Chetan, Shruthi Hariharan and Neethu, led the delegation that interacted with the Chief Minister. Actress Sanjjanaa Galrani also submitted a letter to Siddaramaiah, favouring the formation of a committee.

FIRE’s request comes in the wake of the Justice Hema Committee’s report, which shed light on the prevalence of sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry.

The FIRE urged the Karnataka Government to launch a similar investigation iintothe allegations of misconduct within the Sandalwood industry.

The appeal, signed by 153 prominent figures from Kannada cinema, called for the formation of a committee, led by a retired High Court or Supreme Court judge, to investigate sexual harassment claims and recommend policies to ensure a safe and equitable working environment for women.

FIRE has also requested that the committee’s report be made public within three months to promote transparency and accountability in addressing these pressing issues.
