1 min read

Bengaluru: Security has been heightened in several parts of the State including in State capital, Bengaluru, in the wake of Karnataka bandh on Friday. Various pro-Kannada organisations have called for a Statewide bandh against the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu.

For the second time, the State capital is going to witness the bandh heat as private vehicles, autorickshaws and cabs will stay off the road to extend their support to bandh call. However, BMTC buses and Metro trains will be available, it is said.

Meanwhile, all the colleges in Bengaluru City, Bengaluru rural, Ramanagara, Mandya, Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts have declared holiday in view of the bandh. Even some of the taluks in Hassan district have declared holiday for schools and colleges.

There has been no let up in protests that the State is witnessing against the release of Cauvery river to neighbouring State. The protests spiked especially after the Supreme Court refused to intervene in the Cauvery Water Management Authority rulings.

It may be recalled here that the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee has directed the State government to release 3,000 cusec of water to Tamil Nadu from Sept 28 to Oct 15. Upset over this, several pro-Kannada organisations have called for Karnataka bandh on Friday.
