Assembly elections: Congress high command wants Siddaramaiah to shift from Kolar

2 min read

Bengaluru: In all probability, Opposition leader Siddaramaiah who had chosen to contest from Kolar Assembly constituency in this elections, may not do so, courtesy the Congress High Command.

After the Friday’s Congress’ poll committee meeting, speculations are rife that Siddaramaiah would withdraw from Kolar and may shift to Varuna. Several reports claimed that Congress leaders are of the opinion that it would be a tough fight for Siddaramaiah in Kolar and it would be better for Siddaramaiah if he shifts from Kolar.

As the news went viral, Siddaramaiah told reporters in Delhi that “The Friday’s meeting has not yet finalised about my ticket. However, if the high command wants me to shift from Kolar, I would do so. I will go by the High command decision.”
It may be recalled here that BJP veteran B S Yediyurappa had stated that Siddaramaiah would contest from Varuna and not from Kolar.

Considering Kolar to be a safe constituency as it comprises minorities, backward communities and dalit communities, Siddaramaiah had decided to contest from Kolar constituency. However, the party has now decided against it. Several reports claimed that the political atmosphere in Kolar may not gain votes for Siddaramaiah. With JD(S) fielding entrepreneur, CMR Srinath from Kolar, there are chances that Siddaramaiah may not get Vokkaliga votes. Also, the Congress has not been able to win here since 2004 and considering that it would be difficult for Siddaramaiah to turn the tide in his favour. Besides, Varthur Prakash who has won as an independent candidate from here is expecting a ticket from BJP this time. If he gets to contest as the BJP candidate, then there would be division of votes as Varthur Prakash is also a Kuruba like Siddaramaiah. Keeping all this in mind, the party high command has advised Siddaramaiah to drop Kolar constituency.
