Tribal’s custodial death: 17 forest personnel booked under SC, ST Act

Mysuru: Following the allegations of custodial death of a tribal, Sargur police are learnt to have filed a case against 17 forest personnel including the officials under SC, ST (Prevention of Atrocity) Act.

Kariyappa (49) alias Kariya a Jenu Kuruba from Hosahalli tribal hamlet coming under Gundre fores range had died recently after he was arrested on the charges of selling deer meat.

Kariyappa who had been picked up by forest personnel for questioning was allegedly kept in their custody for three days.

As Kariyappa fell ill, the forest personnel had rushed him to K R Hospital in Mysuru where the doctors had declared him brought dead.

As it turned out to be a controversy with the fellow tribal dwellers launching a flash stir, calling it a case of custodial death, the authorities concerned had swung into action.

On the other hand, forest officials and personnel in question remain at large still.

Now, Sargur police are learnt to have filed a case against 17 including RFOs, DRFOs and others accused in the case.
