Two brain dead, save 14 lives in Mysuru, Bengaluru

Mysuru: In separate cases, two families decided to donate organs of their relatives helping 14 people waiting for organs in Mysuru and Bengaluru.

In a life-changing act, organs harvested from Lawrence, (40) and Shobha (48), were harvested and transplanted at Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru on Thursday. While the remaining organs were sent to other hospitals, altogether saving 14 lives at once.
Lawrence of Hunsur and Shobha (Kushalnagar in Kodagu were brought to Apollo BGS Hospitals on August 16 at 12:40 pm and 2:10 pm from different hospitals respectively, in critical condition. The investigations and CT scans at Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru showed brain stem infarct. They were shifted to ICU for life support and intensive care.
Lawrence met with a road accident on August 16. He was kept on life support for two days while he was in a very critical state. On the third day, he was declared brain dead due to brain stem failure.
Shobha suffered from a Brain Hemorrhage on August 16 and was declared brain dead. Both were assessed as per the hospital protocol stipulated by the transplant of human organs Act 1994 by panelist doctors.
Lawrence and Shobha were healthy before the incident and further tests confirmed their eligibility for organ donation. Attendees were counselled for organ donation respectively as per the defined protocol. The patient’s family members came forward to donate the organs. As per organ donation protocols, officials from Jeeva Sarthakathe which was earlier known as ZCCK initiated the process by the organ recipients waiting list.
All the organs were harvested at Apollo BGS Hospitals Mysuru out of which two Kidneys and two Livers were transplanted to the waitlisted patients. While one kidney and liver transplanted at Apollo Hospital Mysuru, one kidney donated to BGS Global Hospital, Bengaluru, Heart valves donated to Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru. While Cornea was donated to Mysore eye bank.
Similarly organs from Shoba- one kidney was transplanted in Apollo hospital, another in JSS Hospital. Liver was transplanted at Apollo hospital and heart valves were donated to Jayadeva Hospital Bengaluru and Cornea was donated to Mysore Eye bank.
Apollo Hospital Vice-President N G Bharatheeesha Reddy thanked the two deceased families which came forward to donate the organs.
