Mysuru: Three months after Syed Issaq’s make-shift public library at the footpath of Rajivnagar in the city was reduced to ashes in April, the ‘Library Man’ as he is popularly known as is set to start a full-fledged library.

Thanks to like-minded in infiniite numbers spread across the globe, who responded to a social media campaign and collectively donated not less than 5,000 books.

The campaign is still alive and the numbers will go up further.

The credit should go to Prof Muzaffar Assadi of the Department Of Studies in Political Science, University of Mysore, who launched the campaign.

Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) has allotted a CA site to the Department of Libraries to build library at the same place. While Nirmiti Kendra has prepared an estimate to take up the works. If all goes well, the works are expected to take off from August 12, celebrated as Librarians Day. The birth anniversary of ‘Father of Library’ S R Ranganathan, is on August 9.

Muzaffar Assadi told Mysoorunews.com “earlier we launched a social media campaign asking donors to donate books to rebuild library. As the word spread, we began to receive books from foreign countries including London and Dubai. While we received books from Pune, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Cochin, Tirvendrum, Bengaluru and Mysuru, within India. The books have been stored in our department and will be shifted once the  library is ready.”

Syed Issaq who was overwhelmed to receive thousands of books to his library, said, “the Department of Public Libraries has been allotted a site from MUDA. The department has informed to start construction works from August 9 as a tribute to ‘Father of Library’ S R Ranganathan, on his birth anniversary.”

It may be mentioned that the library was gutted after a fire broke out on April  9. During police investigation it came to light that a carelessly thrown matchstick caused the fire.

However, it had caused outrage among the people, who expressed solidarity with Issaq for kindling reading habit among the people.
