Mysuru: Sadguru Jaggi Vasudev of Isha Foundation has said on September 5, “47,000 farmers have committed suicide in Cauvery basin alone, a biggest tragedy of the country”.
Sadguru who has launched ‘Cauvery Calling’ a campaign to improve the fortune of farmers, said ” We have covered nearly 5,000 villages and told the farmers about the importance of agro forestry. It can be a reality, only if the farmers are permitted to adopt agro forestry and fell the trees”.
Stressing that river Cauvery is the lifeline of Karnataka, Sadguru said “monsoon has changed its pattern. When it rains heavily, it causes flood.
Explaining the gravity of farmers, Sadguru said “three lakh farmers have committed suicide in the country. It is better if the agro forestry is permitted to farmers. It is high time we strengthen our farmers. It has been discussed with government to provide subsidy to farmers”.
Sutur seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji said “the pollution of rivers and soil erosion is not helping farmers. To help the farming community we are all ready to join hands with Cauvery Calling”.
Dharmastala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade said ” It is our duty to protect mother earth. Cauvery Calling is just a model to rejuvenate the water bodies. The over consumption of water has created a crises and the judicious use of water is the only solution”.
Mysuru- Kodagu MP Prathap Simha said “the campaign is expected to increase the green cover in Kodagu, where permission is given to cut one lakh trees”.
Kollegal MLA N Mahesh said “the government should give permission to switch over to agro forestry from cultivating commercial crops”.
