Bengaluru: Expressing deep concern over the series of deaths of women in government hospitals in the state, Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy has demanded a thorough investigation by the current judges of the High Court.
In a media statement, he questioned, “Has the government not noticed the issue of substandard medicine supply? Was the Health Minister Dinesh Gundurao unaware of this information?”
Is this women’s empowerment?
In the progressive state of Karnataka, 327 women have died in hospitals this year! This shocking information has been provided by Health Minister Dinesh Gundurao himself, has left me appalled, said Kumaraswamy.
He added, “Even in this modern age, where tremendous strides have been made in the medical field, it is dishonorable for women to be losing their lives in hospitals.”
The state government, which claims to empower women economically through the “Grihalakshmi Guarantee,” is instead causing the deaths of these very women in hospitals. Women who trust government hospitals to give birth are returning home not only without their babies but without their lives. Is this what empowerment looks like? Kumaraswamy questioned.
Who supplied the IV infusion?
The government health system in the state is in complete disarray. Hospitals have become death traps. Women are dying due to substandard glucose and medicines. It is disturbing to hear that 9 women fell critically ill within just two hours of receiving a Ringer’s Lactate IV infusion at Ballari Hospital. So, who supplied this infusion? Which company was responsible for it? Kumaraswamy demanded answers.
He further questioned, “While substandard glucose and medicines have been supplied for days, what has the government been doing? Why did the Health Minister ignore such a sensitive issue? Was he not aware of what was happening in the department?”
“The sins of these women will not be forgiven”
The Minister’s statement, “I will resign if I am at fault,” is unacceptable, Kumaraswamy stated. “Taking responsibility does not mean escaping from it. What is needed is proper treatment for the ailing health department. Atonement is more important than evading responsibility. It is the Minister’s duty to fix the department.”
The government cannot evade responsibility for these deaths. An investigation must be conducted by the sitting judges of the High Court. Immediate action is needed to restore the deteriorating health system, Kumaraswamy emphasized.
