225 patients undergo free angioplasty procedure at Jayadeva Institute

Bengaluru: Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research has successfully conducted 225 free Angioplasties in joint collaboration with Dr. Govindaraju Subramani Heart Foundation and Medtronic Vascular Division, Santarosa, USA. Stents were given free of cost to all patients.
Majority of the patients were poor farmers, daily wage labourers, footpath vendors, autorickshaw drivers, garment workers and senior citizens from Karnataka, Assam, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Bihar.
Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Bengaluru and its braches at Mysuru and Kalaburagi conducted the Angioplasty and Stenting procedure from June 12 to June 18, free of cost.
According to Hospital Director, Dr. C N Manjunath, performing 225 Angioplasties in just 7 days was technically demanding. But it was made possible because the Institute has got 17 Cathlabs, 120 full time Cardiologists and excellent technical and nursing staff.
Dr. Govindaraju Subramani Heart Foundation and Medtronic Vascular Division, Santarosa, USA has donated stents and balloons.
Dr. CN Manjunath said heart related diseases is steadily increasing even among poor people, rural areas and is occurring at younger ages. The youngest patient in the workshop was 31-year-old Male (farmer / tempo driver) and the eldest patient was 85-years-old female (Senior Citizen). Out of 225 patients 78 per cent were male and others are female. Nearly, 25 per cent of them were – below 50 years. The main risk factors among this workshop was there were patients who had complaints of diabetes 50 per cent, hypertension – 53 per cent, smokers – 36 per cent and 30 per cent with high – cholesterol level.
Heart attack related disease is no more a disease of elite class and elderly population, it is also affecting the younger age group, women and poor people. Patients expressed their gratitude to Dr. Subramani, Medtronic USA and Jayadeva Institute for this noble work.
Pre-discharge counseling session was also arranged for these patients, Dr C N Manjunath, Director advised them not to stop blood thinning medicines. Optimal control of hypertension, diabetes along with low fat diet, with more of vegetables and daily walking was advised.
