Mysuru: On the second day of Suttur fair on January 22, as many as 178 couples entered wedlock in a mass marriage ceremony.

It included 106 couples from scheduled caste (SC), 33 from backward classes, 10 from scheduled tribe (ST), 11 from Lingayat, 18 inter-caste and five specially- abled and two couples from Tamil Nadu.

Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda wished the newly wed couples. Veerendra Heggade compared the mass marriage to Srinivas Kalyana and presented marriage certificates to the couples.

Dr Heggade said “marriage is a sacred relationship. However, in the present days movies are demotivating and glorifying the bond between couples as a comedy. It is not a good sign”, he said.
Younger generation is not splurging on lavish marriage ceremonies and are opting for a simple ritual. They also take equal responsibility, and no one is superior or inferior, he stated.
Deve Gowda recalled his five decade long association with Suttur Mutt. The mutt has achieved global fame with its progressive initiatives particularly in the field of education, he added.
During the mass marriage ceremony Suttur Mutt seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji, Mummadi Nirwana Swamji blessed the couples.
