11 devotees electrocuted to death while pulling chariot at Thanjavur

Thanjavur: In all 11 devotees were electrocuted and several others were injured during a temple festival at Kalimedu town at Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu.

The devotees were pulling a temple chariot when the top of the car got entangled in electric wire resulting in the death of 11 including two children. As many as 15 devotees sustained burns and are being treated at the hospital.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin announced exgratia of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted- Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) would be given to the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to the mishap in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. The injured will be given Rs 50,000.

The tragedy occurred when 94th Appar Gurupoojai of Lord Ayyapa festival was being celebrated on Tuesday night. A large number of devotees from nearby areas were participating in the event.

Devotees were pulling the temple chariot throughout the streets when an electric wire got entangled in the chariot.

While three died on the spot, eight others succumbed at Thanjavur Medical College Hospital.
