100th convocation of University of Mysore! Prime Minister Narendra Modi terms NEP as a new direction for future

Mysuru: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday gave a clarion call to the people to identify their true potential to contribute towards the development of the country.

Addressing the gathering online during the 100th convocation ceremony of University of Mysore, virtually from New Delhi, Modi highlighted that “One should introspect and identify the talent in them. It should be not just for personal development, but also for the development of the country, as new India provides a plethora of opportunities to achieve on the basis of personal excellence. So the idea of Atma Nirbhar is floated”.

Stressing on the StartUps that gained traction during Covid crises, Modi termed them as the strength of the country.

Referring to New Education Policy (NEP), Modi said “It gives a new direction irrespective of the level of education. The thrust is on making the youth more competitive to hone their skills to suit the demands with a multi-dimensional approach. Likewise in the last six to seven months, reforms are being made like direct benefits transfer ( DBT), Real Estate Regulatory Act ( RERA), GST, Insolvency Bankruptcy Code and Foreign Direct Investment ( FDI) to strengthen the foundation of the country. So that the current era belongs to the youths of the country”.

Exuding confidence that the University of Mysore is also prepping up to incorporate NEP, Modi said “The varsity should innovate self, by opening incubation centres to encouraging multi-disciplinary research in the realm. Writer Kuvempu had aptly named the main campus of the varsity as Manasagangotri”.

Elaborating on the higher education sector, Modi was happy to acknowledge that the “gross enrolment ratio of girl students has significantly improved when compared to the boys. It is evident with the rate of admission of girl students at IITs which has touched 20 per cent, a significant rise in their participation in science and technology. It is also a sign of changing India”.

Most importantly the founder of the University, Rajarshi Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, in his convocation address then had stated ” I would be happy to see if there are women among the graduates”, recalled Modi quoting the address.

Elaborating further Modi asserted that “when the nation is passing through a phase of transformation, there has been a continuous efforts in the last five to six years to address the needs of the future. So also in the field of higher education sector, the focus is on structural reforms. To make India a global hub, every efforts are being made. It’s only in the last six years, new IITs are being opened every year, including Dharwad in Karnataka, 15 IIMs against seven earlier. The efforts in the realm of higher education is not just restricted to opening new institutions, but also to grant autonomy to address their demands.  As the medical education lacked transparency, National Medical commission was set up. While in the realm of homoeopathy two new laws are being made”.

Apart from imparting education to obtain degrees, the teachers are entrusting the students the responsibility towards the country. Education and teaching are important. Teaching is not just to acquire degree, but an inspiration for new. After obtaining degrees, the graduates will be stepping into real University from a formal set up. In the real University, the knowledge gained will have to be applied.

Crediting Unioversity of Mysore as the important centre of learning, Modi said “It was what Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and Sir M Visvesvaraya had envisioned. Ever since Nalwadi addressed the ceremony same day 100 years ago, the auditorium has been a witness to many luminaries like S Radhakrishnan and many other personalities who have contributed towards nation building and served as a beacon of inspiration for many.

Modi who began his address by extending Nada Habba Mysuru Dasara wishes said “I was going through the photos and felt that despite Covid-19 restrictions the spirit of festival remains as usual. Though the recent rains tried to damage the spirit, the people are highly spirited still”.

“I have been making efforts to interact with young friends during such occasions (like convocation). Though it would have been a different experience had I been there at the ceremony”, said Modi, before setting the tone of his address.

Governor Vajubai R Vala, Deputy Chief Minister Dr C N Ashwathnarayan also the minister for higher education, Vice- chancellor Prof G Hemanth Kumar, registrars Shivappa and K M Mahadevan and others were present.
